About this deal

Though the set is by its nature aimed at collectors and completists, the energetic performances are broadly enjoyable, capturing a period in which Presley was still introducing fresh and varied material into his setlists. Originally recorded for the Elvis On Tour concert film that was released later that year, the set features a total of 145 tracks, including 91 tracks that have been previously unreleased, as well as the award-winning concert film on Blu-ray. Having pointed out how much I have enjoyed this new ‘Elvis On Tour’ box-set there is no doubt that it is a pretty expensive product, especially when it includes the same old Blu-Ray version. Burning Love," which was released as a single just a few months after these concerts and would become Elvis' biggest hit since "Suspicious Minds" in 1969, isn't heard on the Hampton Roads or Richmond Coliseum shows but vigorous renditions appear on the Greensboro Coliseum and San Antonio Convention Center sets. I have a completely different opinion: the sound quality itself is very good, but the mix is frankly horrible.

However while the ‘Separate Ways’ rehearsals were a very fine end to the lengthy first day yet there is no indication of it being the end to the filmed session and so there is an odd jump to ‘Proud Mary’ which was the start of the session the following day. Home Entertainment’s Blu-ray edition of the MGM Film, “Elvis On Tour,” winner of Best Documentary Film at the 30th Golden Globes Awards in 1973 and the last feature film starring Elvis Presley to be released during the artist’s lifetime. But before it there are also 2 of his 'other' earlier Hollywood films Girl Happy and Jailhouse Rock which are also titled as new . I very much doubt this as in the notes to the Elvis on Tour box-set, no reference is made to the late great Ronnie Tutt as being drummer / musician within Elvis' band. At Greensboro, he prefaced his performance by sharing, "We're gonna spring a new song on you tonight. His musical taste were wide and varied…he never ever wanted to be just a rock star, that was far to constraining and he certainly was not a one trick pony like most rock stars/groups. Similarly the ‘Burning Love’ rehearsal on the second day with Elvis explaining the “Hunka, hunka” ending to the band is so cool. The audio mix is extremely good here with clean piano plus James Burton’s rockin’guitar (which for some reason this faded down in the movie). The TCB Band are playing tight as ever, while the loose southern-funk interaction from both the musicians and backing-vocalists add something really special. Suit yourself, but for the record there are seven songs on the Hampton concert alone not included in the San Antonio concert on the Close Up box set.

The newspaper deemed it an advertisement and the reviewer felt that it was the same film as Elvis: That's The Way It Is. Elvis laughs at the pleasure - and in the movie you can see him rolling his head acknowledging the screams from his fans - before bringing it all back with a superb power-ending. To avoid loss of continuity, the cameras were cued to a tape deck that collected the video and sound from all the sources. Most notably, the Follow That Dream label released a 19-song compilation of rehearsals in 2004 as Elvis on Tour - The Rehearsals. Back in mid-2002 I asked Ernst Jorgensen about the possible release of ‘Elvis On Tour’ hoping that it would be released for the 30th anniversary later that year. For the sessions at RCA Records's Hollywood studio, Presley sang the numbers he prepared for the tour and performed Gospel jam sessions with the musicians. The first three CDs in this set feature performances from 9th, 10th and 14th April 1972 respectively; that’s Hampton Roads Coliseum, Virginia; Richmond Coliseum, Virginia; and Greensboro Coliseum, North Carolina.

With that, and two stunning performances done in Hampton Roads that day, it was time to “Take it home”.The setlists for each show were largely similar though not identical as Elvis ran through his greatest hits and more recent favorites in breakneck fashion.

The power and dynamic of ‘An American Trilogy’ is stunning and it also lowers the previously loud JD Sumner in the mix. Elvis On Tour' is a 6CD + 1 Blu-Ray box set comprised of the audio from four of the shows (and two rehearsals) that were part of Elvis’ 1972 North American tour. The reviewer noted there were more males in the crowd compared to the 1950s and that the audience "had matured".Most notably, the collector-oriented Follow That Dream label released a 19-song compilation of rehearsals in 2004 as Elvis On Tour - The Rehearsals.
