About this deal

Julia in particular is dreading it, and during an illicit smoke outside one evening, she confides to Gamache that her family makes her miserable.

It couldn’t be the Madam of the Manoir, she’s too frail and quite unknowing about the workings of statues. But five years later, it’s fun to think about, and remember the context when this extraordinary book came into the world. Gamache and Beauvior spend a good bit of time puzzling over why Julia had her arms outstretched, as if she were hugging the statue to her. It is one of the finest auberges (inns) in Quebec, a place to rest, unwind, and quietly enjoy each other’s company. Peter and Clara Morrow show up at the Manoir to be at a special family reunion of Peter's horrid family.Gamache will never forget that offer…and dissolve into the men looking intently into each other’s eyes. It’s a mystery to me, and I didn’t feel that it was convincingly enough solved in the course of the novel. He is kind, he is loving, he is forgiving, he is calm and steady and believes in forgiveness for everyone, particularly murderers. Besides, she does on occasion have her novels take place somewhere other than the fantasy land that is Three Pines, so actually, a different setting wouldn't make it atypical either. Their stay coincides with another event, the Finney-Morrow family reunion, for which the family has taken the rest of the rooms in the lodge.

Chief Inspector Gamache and his wife Reine-Marie, are celebrating their thirty-five-year wedding anniversary by staying at Manoir Bellechasse for a few days. The detail and bucolic nature of the pieces invite me to keep reading, as though I have developed an addiction for all that is Gamache.Penny’s focus on these themes is so excessive that she adversely affects the credibility of the characters and the motivation for the murder. His parents with their societal issues and their personal issues had certainly warped the lives of their children as we are shown time and again throughout this book. With this group log suspects, Beauvoir may need to pull out all the stops, just to make sense of things. The murder investigation becomes a journey through history, memories, broken relationships, bitter sibling rivalry, childhood hardships and buried secrets.

He was raised in a wealthy family before his father lost everything in a bad investment when he was quite young. He has worked at the same firm since college and has not moved up the ladder, nor does he make much money. The first 90 pages have Armand and his wife Reine-Marie enjoying a well deserved vacation from his job as Chief Inspector of the Homicide Department of the Quebec Surete(police). Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his wife Reine-Marie had been holidaying at the Manoir Bellechasse for many years, and this latest visit would be to celebrate their wedding anniversary. But A Rule Against Murder, to me, also represented prescient timing: the Bernie Madoff scandal had just broken, and Julia and David Martin represented the kind of devastating damage that can be done when avarice, an absence of ethics, and opportunity form a perfect storm.
