About this deal

Her debut short story appeared in The Very Merry Murder Club, edited by Robin Stevens and Serena Patel. The story is set in C18th London, and centres around Lizzie Sancho, and her friend Dido Belle as they try to find out who is threatening to murder Lizzie’s father, Ignatius, before his debut performance on the West End stage. T. Williams described them made me feel as though I was right there with them, joining in with their adventure.

This beautiful story brings Georgian London to life with two delightful young detectives which I instantly fell in love with. On opening night as he entered the stage, a chandelier dropped from the ceiling but it was at this moment that Elizabeth Sancho saw Dido Belle, the first black girl her age that she has seen. As the chandelier dropped the whole theatre was sent into a commotion but the tension was higher for the Sancho family. At the start of the book, the event happened in a fast-paced way – the chandelier fell almost immediately. But when they catch each other’s eyes at the theatre one night, each is delighted to see another Black girl her own age. Lizzie is a very courageous girl who is curious and has the features of a detective because she has the talent for noticing details that other people can’t.

It also includes fantastic character, Ignatius, Sancho and his children (of which Lizzie is one) and wife and the entire premise of a society that doesn’t trust black people , yet is putting on a play of Othello, starring a black man which is controversial, some people are concerned that the only portrayal of black people on stage is of a murderer. The book takes a dramatic start as Elizabeth Sancho’s father, Ignatius Sancho takes the stage to perform The William Shakespeare play of Othello; he was to be the first black man to play the black character of Othello. Now it is time for Lizzie and Belle to put their sleuthing skills to the ultimate test, following a trail of thefts, kidnappings and even poisonings that haunts the twisting London streets. You might imagine, because they are Black, they won’t live in the best conditions: it is the 1770s after all!The book opened my eyes about the slave trade because I had heard of it before but didn’t realise just how serious it really was. Set in eighteenth-century London, with all the fun and zest of Hamilton, Bridgerton fashion and inspired by real Black British historical figures. Ond pan maen nhw’n dal llygaid ei gilydd yn y theatr un noson, mae’r ddwy wrth eu boddau o weld merch Ddu arall o’r un oed. As the Sancho family exited the theatre (without their mother, as she went for their father) , Dido Belle (or just Belle) gave her address to Elizabeth otherwise known as Lizzie.
