About this deal

Color, grain structure, densities, shadow detail, all perfect, as would befit viewing a digital representation of an original camera negative. for having released the film as a single, along with the Kubrick 3-Film 4k Collection, which also offers The Shining and 2001, for those who may not have been keeping up with new releases. Once we hit Da Nang, again the palette appears to be fairly normal for Vietnam war movies, while HDR enjoys some more vibrant greens as well as the warmer climate, but it's only once the fires and flares erupts that we are really wowed by what this new 4K presentation can do, delivering some absolutely stunning vistas, bathed in gorgeous golden orange hues and fiery reds, cast upon the impenetrably black night sky.

The black level is solid and seems so much deeper than ever before, and bright daytime scenes look just stunning. These are fierce performances that echo throughout the movie, and overshadow the latter half, where Matthew Modine and a young Adam Baldwin take centre stage to face the horrors of urban guerrilla warfare. Shifting from the raw brutality of basic training to the dehumanising effects of combat, Full Metal Jacket deftly combines nonstop action with scathing dark humour. I've only ever seen a few minutes of it on a couple occasions on cable long ago back in my college days presumably soon after its theatrical run. Whether it’s the darkened locale of the training barracks’ toilets or the explosive action of the Vietnam War, the 4K treatment looks chillingly atmospheric. These are iconic performances from all of those actors, as well as every single person that served as a member of the cast.

Updated daily and in real-time, we track all high-def disc news and release dates, and review the latest disc titles. This new remaster shows off a great level of detail, with clear textures on sets and costumes, but the HDR (High Dynamic Range) grade is a bit of a mixed bag. It's what keeps humans moving forward as Kubrick shows in the final moments of this brilliant war film. The Vietnam sequences provided the strongest colors, especially during sunset shots, as on those occasions, the golden tones were strong. Everything is done very professionally with this company and always lets you know every step of the process.
